County Departments
Property Tax, Voter Registration, Motor Vehicle Registration and Titles, Beer and Liquor License
The Budget Office administers the County Budget as approved by Commissioners Court. Additionally, the office supports the Commissioner's Court with fiscal planning, monitoring, and policy analysis that assists the Court in making well-informed policy and financial decisions.
Chief process server of the justice court; state-wide jurisdiction to execute any criminal processes;
county-wide jurisdiction to execute any civil processes.
Handles criminal misdemeanor cases; administrates victim restitution; prosecution of hot check
offenders; administrates "selling alcohol to minors" programs.
Audits the records & accounts of various county departments;
administers the county budget as approved by Commissioner's Court; advises Commissioner's Court
concerning financial conditions; enforces laws governing county finances.
Clerk for Commissioner's Court; recorder for the county; carries out elections for the county; issues
marriage licenses; maintains vital statistics (birth certificates, death certificates, land records).
The four Commissioners and the county Judge make up Commissioners Court.
Commissioners court is the governing body of the county; works closely with the County Engineer
regarding construction and maintenance of county roads/bridges that are not part of the state highway
system; commissioners have the general business responsibility for the county as well as contracting
authority; commissioners court has financial responsibility for the county, setting the tax rate,
authorizing expenditures and issuing bonds. Works on legislative issues including (but not limited to)
highways, groundwater, funding.
The county courts try Criminal Misdemeanor Cases for the State and civil cases concerning the State. These courts also issue warrants.
Maintains and builds county roads and bridges.
Presiding officer of commissioner's court; chief financial officer for the county; administrative
influence for the county.
Responsible for receiving all money due the county from whatever source; responsible for the
disbursement investment of funds in the county treasury; responsible for accounting for all funds in the
county treasury.
Handles the establishment, enforcement, and modification of child support cases filed with the Attorney
General's office; authority covers 12 counties: Bastrop, Brazos, Burleson, Freestone, Grimes, Lee, Leon,
Limestone, Madison, Robertson, Walker, Washington.
Attends the state district courts; prosecution of felony criminal cases; may handle some civil and
criminal misdemeanor cases.
Clerk for all cases processed in the district courts; clerk for criminal cases processed in the county
courts; provides passports to county residents.
District Courts try Criminal Felony Cases for the state, some civil cases concerning the State and try
some misdemeanor criminal cases. These courts also issue warrants.
Provides planning of the handling of local emergency situations; coordinates the resources (fire,
police, etc.) for an emergency.
Provides space for special events and meetings.
Health Clinic: Provide health care, health education, clinical, environmental, and laboratory
services.
Environmental Clinic: Food service establishment inspections; day care facility inspections;
sewage facility permits & inspections; environmental investigations; residence health/sanitation
inspections.
Help county employees understand their working rights and benefits; accepts and processes job
applications; manages/coordinates employee benefits including health insurance.
Administer computer systems. Program & troubleshoot system applications for county employee users.
Administer county computer networks. Maintain PC hardware & software for county employee users.
Create & maintain county web site.
Provide all functions required for jail facilities.
Coordinates the creation and service of jury panels; administrates the payment of jurors.
Tries minor misdemeanor offenses (Class C), tries civil matters where the amount does not exceed $10,000;
tries small claims cases where the amount does not exceed $10,000; may preside over driver license
suspension hearings; conducts marriage ceremonies; serves as notary public.
Assure juvenile offender accountability for illegal behavior; provide services to these juveniles
encouraging them to develop emotionally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually, thereby
reinforcing positive behavioral changes.
Provide upkeep and repair of buildings and equipment used by county employees.

To assist each county department to procure necessary goods and services at the best possible price; to
provide vendors with one single source of contact for county procurement opportunities; ensure
compliance with all purchasing laws.
Identify those activities in county government which may expose Brazos County to undue losses and then
recommend methods or activities that will eliminate or control the exposure; provide personnel training;
act as the county claims department.
Responsible for operating the county jails, investigating crimes, traffic control, and maintaining
communications with other law enforcement organizations; the sheriff's department has countywide
jurisdiction but mostly concentrates their activities outside city limits where municipal officers
cannot operate.
Maintains state/county vehicle registrations; collects fees; issues titles.
Provide information and services to veterans of American wars.
Maintain a list of people eligible to vote in elections and perform jury duty.
Affiliated Organizations
The Bail Bond Board is responsible for the licensing and regulation of bail bond companies.
Serves the district and county courts by conducting pre-sentence investigations, supervising offenders,
collecting court-imposed restitution and fees, and by notifying the courts of a defendant's violation of
probation; provides services such as counseling to defendants.
Create countywide awareness and appreciation of historic preservation and its benefits and uses.
Study roadway traffic, plan needed roadway systems; inform the public of congested areas and suggest
alternative routes.
Provides educational programs focused on agriculture, health & safety, environmental & land stewardship,
and preparing youths for a future in agriculture; access knowledge from Texas A&M University and the
U.S. Department of Agriculture.
