Instructions for Submitting an Open Records Request

To submit an open records request, please hand deliver, fax, or mail a completed open records request form to the attention of the official from whom you are seeking records (see County Judge, Other Records, or Judicial Records below).

A request to inspect or copy a judicial record:

• must be in writing
• must include sufficient information to identify the record
• must be directed to the custodian of the record

All requests for public information are treated uniformly. To facilitate handling of your public information request, please also send a copy of your records request to:

Once the request is submitted, it will be reviewed to determine if the information is deemed public. If the information is public, your request will be processed and sent out in a timely manner.

Under §552.201(a), (b) of the Texas Government Code, the office of the County Judge is responsible for the processing of requests for records in Brazos County except for those records created or received in the offices of elected county officials of Brazos County as provided below (see Other Records and Judicial Records below).

Judicial Records Requests

The Public Information Act applies only to information that is held by a "governmental body," the definition of which "does not include the judiciary." Access to judicial records (records other than court case records) is governed by Rule 12 of the Rules of Judicial Administration. The custodian of judicial records is usually the judge of the court and a request must be sent to the records custodian and not to a court clerk or other agent for the records custodian.
